I came to WT from a friend running a Civil War early supers game. He's also the same friend who worked on the Devil's Brigade supplement so he knew the systems and how they would play. It was an interesting, fun game.

I think I might try it with some friends of mine in the more classic superhero setting. It might be just enough to get my daughter and wife to participate.

ORE is a not bad mechanic and WT is a pretty meaty product.

I love Champions 5E, but you have to play with the right people (min-maxers just cause grief). Champions lets you do a lot with a lot of carefully thought out math, but that tends to make character builds an hour or more (maybe a bit less if you know the book and the things you want to do, quite a bit longer if it is your first character build).

I think the lighter flavour of WT is a better fit for less hard-core gamers. Even me, who played original Villains and Vigilantes, original Champions, and a bunch of other hero games plus every other stripe or RPG you could imagine, I've waded through really crunchy rulesets ... but I'm older now and it doesn't seem like the extra pain of complex rules yields enough benefit to make it worth the effort. WT seems to hit a great spot. There are even more minimalist supers games, but this one to me is at just about the perfect level of crunchiness.

I recall fights in it being not so lengthy as Champions combat and I thought that was good (much like AD&D fights being much faster than 3.x and even some 5E fights.... just simpler systems but enough for the job).

And I like to see other choices rather than the predominant choice in any aspect of RPGing as it adds interesting bits and pieces and expands a GMs view of what there is out there and what might be fun.

Ran this for a group of friends who are mainly newbies or used to freeform RPGs. They picked it up in minutes, and we had a great time. If you're looking for a game with a fun mechanic and a lot of internal flexibility, this is it. If you're looking for a simulation or something with lots of realistic benchmarks, look elsewhere though. The actual results of play feel realistic enough, but I had some trouble getting one friend to accept the softer bits. I like using the ORE, especially if I'm homebrewing something, since it's so easy to create complexity without getting bogged down.

After having played in one campaign of Wild Talents and run another, I think it's fair to give my view on it. Spoiler alert! I was in two campaigns of it. It's really really good.

Wild Talents is the (slightly) generic version of the One Roll Engine for superheroes that has powered the WWII supers game Godlike. It allows for a single roll to resolve whether a character succeeds at their task, how well they succeed, and even hit location in combat.

The Essentials Edition is the most stripped down version of the game, but even it contains a great deal of content, including pre-built characters and powers that can be pulled out and used.

Wild Talents is not the best One Roll Engine game (that's A Dirty World, by the way, you're welcome.) But it is the most comprehensive in terms of its breadth and flexibility. You can run any sort of people-with-powers game in Wild Talents. A caveat to this is important, though. In Godlike, the characters were very fragile. A single gunshot could ruin a superhero's day. This reflected well the themes of war and sacrifice that Godlike pursued. However, it does mean that until you develop some skill in the One Roll Engine, you might find yourself with some dead Talents on your hands. It does have a learning curve, and if you're really not sure of the system yet, you absolutely owe it to yourself to TAKE ONE OF THE PREMADE CHARACTERS. Play it first until you get some idea of the various types of dice that will be filling up your die pool (and those of the enemies). Make sure you understand how they're able to shoot you in the head and kill you.

Once you have some skill in avoiding that (or if you don't care whether you avoid it or not because fragile supers is what you want) then Wild Talents will shine.

The Essential Edition is priced amazingly cheaply for such a tremendously thorough and well-tested product. You shouldn't pass it up - just be aware of the learning curve and TRY IT FIRST before you play it "for real". You will be glad you did.

I honestly think that this is the best superhero system I have ever come across.

It's brilliance lies partly with the ORE (One-Roll Engine) system itself, which is a fast and simple system based on rolling a number of d10 (up to 10d10) and looking for matches. In most cases, one roll of the dice determines everything from initiative to hit location to damage, and only in certain cases will you have to make more than one roll per turn of combat. Everyone I know has found it easy to learn and easy to use.

The only complicated part of the game mechanics is power creation, but this is also where Wild Talents absolutely shines. There is a very comprehensive list of ready-to-play superpowers to be used both as written, and as base examples to modifiy for individual taste. They are also good examples of how powers fit together - useful when you are building your own.

Powers are build with one or more of three basic power qualities (Attacks, Defends and Useful) which determine what you can do with the power, and to each quality you can add extras and flaws for added effects, limits and perks. Most of it is pretty easy to understand and self-explanatory, but there are certain parts that take a little effort to get the hang of. However, using this system you can create any power you can think of - and I mean that literally! I have yet to come up with something that can't be designed using the system.

This book contains the complete rules you need to play, including a section with modern day NPCs, a small selection of Animals, and a few sample characters - three of which are used in the book's example play.

Wild Talents can be a quite lethal game, though - it is more gritty than four-color, but the book contains several rules options and suggestions for tailoring it to different styles of play.

Because of the total freedom in power creation, there is very litte inherent game balance. In fact, some places in the text actually encourage min-maxing the system for such imbalance and think outside the box when approaching challenges. There's a three-page chapter on different approaches choose and how to get them to work. As such, the game requires a bit more co-operation between GM and players than many other games.

If you think other super hero games are a bit too limited in their choices of powers, and you want an easy to learn, fast paced combat system that can easily be tailored from realistic to four-color, then this is the system for you!

There are also several different setting books published to date (most of them even come with a free pdf of these rules!), most notably a victorian setting, a civil war setting, and two alternate history 20th century settings; all of them well worth checking out.

This game is the next great Super Hero game out there. I would rate it up there with Hero System, GURPS, and FASERIP in playability and potential playing power. ORE is awesome.

The original game was great. There are only improvements in this edition. I can't wait for the second edition to come out. Great game system! Especially for those GMs who like to create their own worlds.
